Poll: Is a Speed Camera Really Needed at Steger Sixth Grade Center?

There are two stop signs in front of the school at N. Rock Hill Rd. and Lithia Ave. Traffic is slow going when school begins and lets out. You tell us! Is a speed camera really needed there?

The Rock Hill Board of Aldermen will be considering the installation of a speed camera in front of Steger Sixth Grade Center in the next couple weeks.

It's also home to the Elementary Computer SchoolB&W Sensors presented the idea to the board of aldermen during a work session on Tuesday.

See previous story: Rock Hill to Consider Speed Cameras near Steger Sixth Grade Center

City Manager George Liyeos said that since the city is putting in a traffic signal near Steger over the summer, now would be the time to consider a camera. He said there is indeed a speeding problem near the area, and that last year, two construction workers were nearly killed there.

So, yes the area will be a work zone in months to come, but is there really a speeding problem in an area that already has stop signs? You tell us! Vote in the poll below!

No we do not need a speed camera that location. The double stopsign is annoying but it is effective. I also do not agree with the stoplIght going in there. I live rather close to the school and do not see a need to change what is there.

Thank you for the opportunity to comment. The south bound stop sign works well. North bound does not however work as well when traveling at the legal speed limit down Rock Hill Rd. [toward Manchester]. Drivers disengage their brain when coming to this sign

Why SPEED CAMERAS? More cost to purchase, install and maintain? Do we have the money for this foolishness? Or is our CM trying to assume the roll that was vacated by our own living speed trap?

Has anyone addressed the real problem? Is it one of careless speeders or does gravity take a huge roll in this situation?

The question is "What can we do to slow down cars when going down hill before Manchester?" I applaud the idea and the clue from other communities - install a set of timed traffic stop lights – functioning during school hours and flashing when school is out.. I believe this will work better than a set of metal sign and require drivers to think and react before reaching the stop sign. It will be less intrusive and disruptive when school is out. [The only question is will cross traffic have a chance to make it across the intersection before ongoing traffic pulls out into the flow?] I don’t believe speed cameras will do anything but shuffle traffic off to a non-monitored street and that IMHO sir, is calling for disaster to befall for our kids. Also I believe we already have a reputation as the #1 speed trap in St. Louis County. Do we need more fuel for the fire?

Thanks for chiming in Mike and Christopher! It always helps to hear from those who drive in the area! According to the company proposing to install the camera, there would be no cost to the city. B&W Sensors would supply the camera, equipment and manpower (if needed) to operate the cameras.
