Vandals Set Fire to Playground Equipment at Webster Recreation Complex

One of the playground's slides, which had police tape around it Monday, and a nearby trashcan were set afire Saturday night.

Vandals set fire to a slide on the playground at the Webster Groves Recreation Complex Saturday night around 9:50 p.m., according to the most recent city police report.

The slide had police tape around a hole cause by the fire on Monday. A trashcan nearby was also set on fire.

Patch was unable to reach anyone from the Webster Groves Police Department on Monday for further details.

However, Mike Oppermann, the city's parks and recreation director, said no one was injured in the fire. He also noted that the city's parks occassionally are vandalized - just as they are in other municipalities.

"We don't like it, and it's primarily kids, but the police can't be there 24/7," Oppermann said. "Right now, we're proactively working to get it replaced as quickly as possible."

Anyone with information on this incident should contact the police department at 314-645-3000.

Patch will update this story as if more information becomes available.

That pitiful "draping" of police tape is supposed to keep kids off the equipment?
