Webster Feeds Food Drive Set for Super Bowl Sunday
Irene Ryan, an eighth grader at Hixson Middle School, started the drive last year as part of a service requirement in the school's gifted program.
Webster Feeds, a group collecting donations for Operation Food Search, is gearing up for its second annual Super Bowl Sunday food drive. The event will be held at the Webster Groves Schnucks on Feb. 5 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Irene Ryan, a student at Hixson Middle School, started the month-long project last year. She's in school's Gifted Education in the Middle School (GEMS) program, which requires students to put in a number of hours volunteering in the community.
Rather than volunteering for a few hours, Irene's parents challenged her to do something bigger.
"We told her 'Yes, you can just put in some service hours, but you can also do something big that can be a legacy,'" Dee Ryan said. "We told Irene we'd help her, but it was her deal."
Ryan said last year's food drive a huge success.
"We were blown away," Ryan said. "In addition to dropping off food, we had people giving us $100 checks."
This year, Webster Feeds has turned into more of a family project. It now has a Facebook page, and the family has been using social media to promote the effort and to gather donations.
Those Facebook and Twitter posts garnered the attention of Milagro Modern Mexican, which volunteered to help Webster Feeds by holding a happy hour benefit. On Thursday, the restaurant gave away free tacos for canned good donations. The three-hour benefit raised two full bins of food and $127.
Ryan, who also has a fifth grader, said she and her family plan to make Webster Feeds a yearly event at least while the girls are in school.
If you can't make the food drive on Super Bowl Sunday, you can make a contribution on Webster Feeds online donor page. The page will be live for about a week after Super Bowl, Ryan said.

Thanks for sharing our information! We had a really successful event this year, filling over 8 bins, and collecting over $550.00 (so far!). We are so fortunate to live in such a great and generous community. And our event at Milagro was successful beyond our wildest hopes. Adam and Jason Tilford of Milagro are such assets to the Webster Groves Community!
