Webster Groves Considering Alternate Date for Fireworks Display

Attendance at this year's Community Days Festival was down due to the lack of fireworks displays and oppressive heat. But city officials are working on rescheduling the fireworks display.

Webster Groves city officials are working on scheduling a new date for the fireworks display that was canceled due to the extreme heat and dry conditions during this year's Community Days festival.

Mike Oppermann, the city's parks and recreation director, said attendance at this year's four-day event was way down due to the oppressive heat and the lack of the fireworks displays.

"The unprecedented heat and lack of the fireworks displays made it really challenging," he said. "I think people wanted to come out, but it was just too hot."

Oppermann said the parade went off without a hitch, but the other Community Days events were less well attended compared to years past.

"It was a tough year," he said. "But we'll be announcing in the next couple to three weeks when the fireworks display will be rescheduled. There are a lot of community events we are considering that will be a real plus to the community."
