For the fourth time in his young career, Matt Carpenter stepped to the plate against Matt Cain. And as he had the previous three times, Carpenter hit a single off the Giants pitcher—this time knocking in a pair of runs to seal the St. Louis Cardinals 8-2 win over San Francisco on Monday.
“(Cain) is one of the best pitchers in the game and I’ve had some good at-bats against him, but they’ve all been tough,” said Carpenter. “Even tonight, I was down in the count, the count was 1-2 when I got the hit. He makes tough pitches, and fortunately I was able to get the barrel on it tonight and get the job done.
