One of St. Louis’ most popular and longstanding volunteer events, the Y Bookfair involves some 400 volunteers logging more than 9,000 hours. Over the course of six months, roughly 1 million books, records, and CDs are
collected, sorted and placed for sale – attracting customers from 20 states coast to coast.
Volunteers include students from Washington University and Lindenwood University, Carondelet Y Service Club (founder of the fair), two Boy Scout troops, two Home School organizations, YMCA Teen Leaders, and many
community volunteers. In addition, the United Way has connected volunteers from College Bound, the Edward Jones Company, Bank of America and Americorps.
The Y Bookfair has raised more than $1.6 million for Y Community Literacy. Y Literacy provides free one-on-one reading tutoring to kids and adults, free books and parenting support programs at 26 locations throughout the
