Webster University Welcomes Chess Grandmaster Susan Polgar and the Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence (SPICE)
WHAT: CHECKMATE! Webster University will hold an event to welcome to campus and to the St. Louis region chess Grandmaster Susan Polgar, her Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence (SPICE) and three members of the No. 1-ranked Webster University Chess Team. Today, St. Louis is recognized as the worldwide hub for chess excellence. Webster is proud to welcome Susan Polgar and to play a pivotal role in the international game of chess.

BACKGROUND: Chess is recognized as an important international sport with the ability to draw players together from all over the world – both in person and online – a good fit for Webster University. It is valued for its instructional impact for people of all ages across all geographic boundaries. Globally, educators recognize chess as a tool to cultivate interest and success in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines. At Webster, SPICE and Susan Polgar will be leaders in promoting chess as a vehicle for global diversity and academic excellence, for enriching the education of children and for promoting women’s chess.
VISUAL OPPS: Immediately following the program, audience members will have the opportunity to play chess with Polgar and Webster University Chess Team members. In addition, Chess Grandmaster and incoming freshman Ray Robson will play opponents blindfolded!
