An Elementary Perspective: Broccoli

Parents and grandparents need to read the memo on good and bad food.

My daughter Julia came to live with me two years ago for school. It isn't easy for me to raise someone who is practically my nine-year-old clone, but that is exactly what I find I am doing with Julia. Through our judo and soccer practices, reading, writing and arithmetic, Girl Scouts, and Japanese language classes, we occasionally have a conversation that connects us both in a sometimes deep and usually humorous way. Hopefully, you will be as entertained as we are.

Broccoli

The extended Greene family are having a holiday meal prepared by Mama.  The entrée is broccoli and cheese wrapped in ham.

Mama:  I just love this meal!  You know, Uncle Panda doesn’t like this meal.  It has ham, broccoli and cheese; what’s not to like?

(without skipping a beat)

Julia:  Broccoli.

The funny thing I have five kids who aren't super big fans of any vegetable but broccoli. I steam it or serve it raw with dip and they usually fight over the last piece. Strange kiddos!

I always loved those "odd" vegetables as a boy, too. I find it odd that she does not like broccoli, asparagus, brussel sprouts, lima beans, or spinach.
