An Elementary Perspective: Walking In Circles

Fourth-graders believe that sideline passes are available to everyone.

My daughter Julia came to live with me two years ago for school. It isn't easy for me to raise someone who is practically my nine-year-old clone, but that is exactly what I find I am doing with Julia. Through our judo and soccer practices, reading, writing and arithmetic, Girl Scouts, and Japanese language classes, we occasionally have a conversation that connects us both in a sometimes deep and usually humorous way. Hopefully, you will be as entertained as we are.

Walking In Circles

Julia and Daddy are at Monday night’s District 2 championship game, Kirkwood versus Webster.  Both schools have been kind enough to give Julia and Daddy sideline passes.  Just as the game began, Julia asked if her grandfather (Papa) is at the game.  The game is just past the first quarter and Julia is walking in circles…

Julia:  Daddy, I’m really tired.  Can we sit in the seats?

Daddy:  Don’t say “can.”

Julia:  May we please sit in the seats?

Daddy:  (glancing at the seats)  Sure, go sit there.

Julia:  Well, I want you to sit with me.

Daddy:  Sigh.  Are you manipulating me?  Are you asking to do this so that you may sit with your Papa?

(Julia tries to suppress a big smile)

Julia:  Uhhhh…  no…  ummm….  I’m not manipulating you…

Daddy:  Really?  Why are you trying not to smile?

Julia:  Sigh.

(Shawn Greene will be providing the keynote speech at the Kirkwood Football Alumni Breakfast at 8 am, Turkey Day, at the cafeteria of Kirkwood High School.  Those interested in sharing breakfast before the big game and learning a bit more of the history of Turkey Day and the Adams Road Rivalry are welcome to attend.)
