Elementary School Hoops: Annunciation Bests Mary Queen of Peace

The two teams include players from both Catholic elementary schools and from the Webster Groves, Kirkwood and Lindbergh school districts.

This week we’ll take a look at two fifth-grade girls basketball teams. and competed Saturday, Feb. 25 at Annunciation.

The Mary Queen of Peace team consists of Anna Steele-Avery, Emilia Brown, Madeline Cordes, Kaitlyn Esson, Claire Heggie, Jane Leritz, Sarah Lovett, Elizabeth Lowdermilk, Caroline Sullivan. All of these players attend Mary Queen of Peace, except, Sarah Lovett who attends  in the . Rob Heggie coached the girls.

The Annunciation team also has several players who attend school at Annunciation, including: Kaitlyn Akers, Krista Bretsch and Claire Hite. Molly Fischer attends in the Lindbergh School District. The rest of the girls attend schools in the . Madeline Haug, Emilee Luettemeyer and Allyson Peters attend school at . Claire Salmon is a student at . Both Emily Leaver and Caroline Riganti are students at . Finally, Olivia Holley attends school at . Brian Bretsch coached this team.

Annunciation won the game 14-8. Both teams had a lot of talented players who were quite aggressive in taking the ball to the basket and playing defense. I could tell by the way they played that some of the girls have been playing basketball for a few years. Being a former high school basketball coach, I was really pleased that both coaches made sure that each player got a lot of court time. It is so important at this level that coaches focus of basic skills and court time, instead of winning.

The official table didn’t keep individual stats. However, I managed to get the individual scores from the Annunciation coach for his team. Oliva Holley scored 6 points, Allyson Peters scored 4 points and Emily Leaver and Caroline Riganti each scored 2 points. The Mary Queen of Peace team left the gym before I could get individual scores and a team picture. I suggest that you remember these names as some of these basketball players will definitely be stars on a high school team in the future.
