Angels throw a defensive blanket over Webster's ace Maddie Pokorney.
The way the soccer season ended for Webster Groves is not what the Statesmen had hoped for. Played before a very large crowd on a very hot day, Webster was mauled by the Angels, 4-0, losing the title game of Class 3, District 8. No matter, Websters’ squad left Frontenac with their heads held high. They played in the rarified air of a 22-3-1 season. “Every team ends the season with a crushing loss, other than the eventual state champion,” said Webster’s coach Chris Allen. “If you’d told me we’d have that kind of record, I would have told you, you are crazy.” Webster soared to new heights. This was their first game contested for the district title since the 1990 season. They recorded the most wins in school history and beat Kirkwood for the …

Star senior center fielder Lex Kaplan thrown out of the game with one out left in the last inning. Faces a suspension in the title game later today.
The guy with the warmest seat today is Ladue’s Athletic Director Brian Garner. He has cleared his desk and he will be working on one single issue--trying to get the Rams star center fielder Lex Kaplan eligible for today’s district championship game at St. Louis U. High. With one out in the final inning of the game with Webster Groves, Ladue came up with a spectacular out, shortstop Michael Wielanski to third baseman Dylan Barstow on a tag opportunity. Kaplan, who came in, in relief of starter Rob Ewald was hustling over to third to help out. Something he said, got him tossed out by the base umpire. Off the record, Kaplan would swear on a stack of Bibles, that whatever he said, it was not directed to the umpire. All the protesting in the …

Bombers trample visiting Webster Groves 13-0 with an 11-goal first half performance.
The John Burroughs girls lacrosse team has all the components of a fine symphony orchestra in perfect sync. And that doesn’t go unnoticed, because right over their shoulders is the construction of a brand new, multi-million dollar fine arts center rising on their campus. The impresarios have all the elements in place. Defense knows its role; the Bombers have solid goal keeping and they have several attackers who can score with ease. Wednesday, all the pieces fell into place with the Bombers pitching a rare shutout, 13-0 over visiting Webster Groves. The Bombers got their 10th goal with 3:10 remaining in the first half, forcing most of the starters to the bench and a clock shortened second-half. The Bombers needed that. After jumping out to…

Bombers pile up 11-0 halftime lead and win 13-0.
Webster Groves coach Andrew Hittler knows building a lacrosse program is no overnight matter. It takes nurturing at the lower levels to compete at the varsity. The Lady Statesmen got their mouth guards handed to them, absorbing a 13-0 clock-shortened game at John Burroughs Wednesday. By halftime, most of the Burroughs starters were on the bench. Leanne Hurster had four-first half goals, Barrett Carlson three and Abby Frerotte, senior goal tender recorded a rare shutout for this sport. Burroughs is 10-3, Webster tumbled to 7-11. Friday, Patch.com will have more extended coverage of the scoring; interviews with both coaches and with a couple of Burroughs standouts. Check Patch.com Friday for more on the progress of local girls lacrosse.
