The gallery has had homes on Gore Avenue in Webster Groves for more than 40 years, but decided to take up property just around the corner on Lockwood.
McCaughen and Burr Fine Arts Gallery has made Webster Groves a home for 43 years out of its history in St. Louis since 1840. But after popping up in different locations on Gore Avenue over that time, the family-owned gallery has found a new home at 117 Lockwood Avenue just around the corner from its most recent spot where Euclid Records is now moving in. "It was just too much," Owner Scott Kerr told Patch. "We wanted to create a more intimate space." The gallery shifted from about 9,000 square feet to 5,000, taking roughly three months to make some "major renovations," Kerr said. Webster House Galleries on Big Bend Boulevard is prepping for its first opening reception and exhibit early in April.
"There's so much happening in the arts in Webster." That was Maria Gianino's conclusion as managing director of the new Webster House Galleries. After naming a slew of Webster Groves art events and describing how the arts enrich the Webster community, Gianino shared ways she hopes Webster House Galleries can add to that trend. Which, Gianino said, is where the idea for Webster House Galleries started. The two homes at 7522-7526 Big Bend Boulevard in Webster Groves, zoned for commercial use, are both owned by Gianino. Webster Groves painter Benjamin Guffee creates impressionist nature scenes, as he prepares for a spring solo show.
Webster Groves artist Benjamin Guffee paints nature. Oil paints are his medium of choice, and modern impressionism his genre. The walls of his Maplewood studio are lined with paintings of trees, earth and water—complex forms in which he sees a simple beauty. "I think there's a peacefulness that comes from it, a sense of contentment that is really lacking in the world," he said. "It's kind of opposite of the grind and materialism and always looking for the next thing." Guffee is a transplant to Webster Groves—he moved here about five years ago to marry his wife Jill and be closer to her family, who are natives of the area. How many different businesses are the Gianinos going to "open" in the same two houses in Webster Groves? This makes 4, 5? Not counting the "South Hampton" thrift stores and Farmers Marketing and galleries-and with her grown kids posing as random "artisans" rather than using real artists. Doubt it?
