Rayshawn Simmons Proving to Be a Statesmen Two-Sport Star

After finishing off another fantastic fall as quarterback for the Webster Grove's football team, Simmons has led the Statesmen basketball squad to an 8-1 start this winter.

Webster Grove's senior Rayshawn Simmons is the quintessential high school star athlete. He just completed a brilliant two-year run as starting quarterback of the Statesmen varsity football team, which went 22-3, made two trips to the playoffs and had a state championship game appearance in his two seasons as Webster’s lead signal-caller. And during that time, the 6’3, 190-pound passing phenomena set a number of school records with his more than 4,500 total passing yards and nearly 50 touchdowns, including all-time bests of 2,797 yards and 30 touchdowns this past season for the Statesmen. But this winter, Simmons has taken on a new task. He’s the quarterback, err, point guard of the Webster Groves varsity basketball team. And he’s already …

Webster Hoops: Two Teams Win Tournament Titles

Senior standouts Lexi Cochran, of Nerinx Hall, and Rayshawn Simmons and Peter Fairbanks, of Webster Groves High School, prove to be stars in championship game wins.

In an undoubtedly terrific week of high school hoops in the Webster Groves area, the Nerinx Hall girls and Webster Groves boys, both won their respective invitational tournaments. Nerinx claimed its tournament championship Friday with a 67-60 win over rival Cor Jesu Academy, after rallying back from an 11-point deficit, behind 26 points by senior Lexi Cochran. Head coach Mike Slater seemed more relieved than excited that his Markers were able to pull off such a splendid comeback victory, especially after Nerinx denied Cor Jesu any real scoring chances in the final 1 1/2 minutes of the game by forcing three straight turnovers. “In that last 91 seconds, I told (the girls) it was all about desire and focus," Slater said. "If we could take …

Turkey Day Game Countdown

Junior Varsity Squads to Face Off in Turkey Day Game

Kirkwood's advancement to the Class 5 State Championship Game has set the stage for the 2011 Turkey Day Game to be played by the Pioneers and Statesmen junior varsity teams for the third year in a row.

For the third straight year and sixth time in the last 10 years, the annual Kirkwood-Webster Groves Turkey Day Game will not feature varsity squads. The annual Thanksgiving Day matchup between Kirkwood and Webster has been a tradition since 1907. The two teams met nearly 100 times in that span with the Frisco Bell and year-long bragging rights on the line for the winning team. But in recent years, the Turkey Day Classic has been played with a little twist.   Specifically, it has become a showdown between the schools' junior varsity teams because one of the two varsity teams had earned itself a shot at the Show-Me Bowl State Football Championship game, which is usually played on the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving.   In 2009 and 2010…

Senior running back Alan Gasanli, the Suburban South Conference’s second-leading rusher this …

Statesmen Earn Trip to State Football Playoffs

Senior quarterback Rayshawn Simmons threw for 239 yards and accounted for five touchdowns in a 38-24 Webster Groves win over Parkway North.

With its back pressed firmly against the proverbial wall Friday night at Moss Field, and with the team in need of a big night in the final game of the regular season to assure itself a spot in Class 5 state football playoffs, the Webster Groves quarterback Rayshawn Simmons made a giant statement about who he is as a player. Simmons was coming off a rare bad game, in which he threw four interceptions, in a 21-point loss to Parkway Central last week. But on Friday, the 6-foot-3-inch senior was just brilliant, passing for 417 yards and four touchdowns in a thrilling 38-24 win over rival Parkway North that helped the Statesmen earn a trip to the playoffs for the fourth straight year. “The type of athlete he is, the type of kid he is, the type …

Statesmen rally from early deficit for 38-24 win over Vikings.

MOSS FIELD – The Webster Groves Statesmen football team earned itself a spot in the Missouri Class 5 state football playoffs on Friday night, with a 38-24 home victory over Suburban South Conference rival Parkway North. Parkway North, which finished its season with a 5-5 record, led early by scores of 7-0 and 14-6, but Webster rallied with an 18-point second quarter, thanks to a field goal and a pair of touchdown passes by quarterback Rayshawn Simmons to grab a 24-14 lead by halftime. In the second half, Webster extended its lead in the third quarter and cruised to its eighth victory of the season. Tune in to Webster Groves Patch Saturday morning for full coverage of Friday night’s big game between Webster Groves and Parkway North.

The winner advances to the Missouri Class 5 state playoffs, while the loser is done for the season.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS – PREP FOOTBALL GAME PREVIEW Parkway North Vikings (5-4)  vs.  Webster Groves Statesmen (7-1) Friday, Oct. 28, 2011 – 7 p.m. – Moss Field WEBSTER GROVES – The final week of the high school football season is always one of high intensity and emotion, as players and coaches that have put a whole season’s worth of work into trying to chase down a championship are suddenly staring down the barrel of watching their dreams go up in smoke with a loss at the wrong time. Suburban South Roundup: Webster Football Among Spotless Teams

News and notes from the Suburban South Conference, including Webster Groves football, soccer and volleyball updates.

Webster Groves defeated Rockwood Summit, 31-14, on Friday and the 4-0 Statesmen are one of three undefeated teams in the Suburban South. Webster (4-0, 2-0) trails Kirkwood (4-0, 3-0) and Parkway Central (5-0, 3-0) only because those teams have played one more league game than Webster. But the Statesmen will have their chance to ascend to first place if they simply keep winning. Kirkwood plays at Parkway Central in a key "survival" game this Friday while Webster will host struggling Parkway West (1-4) at 7 p.m. Webster quarterback Rayshawn Simmons has received heavy coverage this season, but the team is well-balanced offensively. Running back Dante Flowers has 255 rushing yards and receiver A.J. Farrar has 18 receptions for 254 yards. …

Statesmen Defeat SLUH With Ease

The impressive ground and air attack prove to be too much for SLUH in the second half as the Statesmen coast to a blowout victory.

Led by an impressive ground and air attack from QB Rayshawn Simmons, the Statesmen handily defeated SLUH 49-28 Friday.   With 21 points in the first quarter alone, Webster Groves seemed poised to claim victory early by running up an insurmountable lead. But the Jr. Bills were able to launch a comeback approaching halftime cutting the deficit to seven. All of the momentum from the conclusion of the first half seemed to be in the Jr. Bills favor, but it quickly disappeared as the Webster Groves surged ahead, never looking back. The impressive ground attack by Dante Flowers and Simmons ate up plenty of clock in the third quarter, robbing the Jr. Bills of any chance at a comeback. The Jr. Bills showed a bit of life late in the 4th quarter by …

Two-Sport Standout Simmons Leading Statesmen's Title Quest

Webster senior QB Rayshawn Simmons is focused on taking the school back to the state football championship game.

Before the start of the 2011 season, the last time Webster Groves QB Rayshawn Simmons was on a football field was at the 2010 Class 5 state championship game against Lee's Summit West. That is where a memorable season ended for the Statesmen, who were punished for their mistakes en route to a 44-21 loss. That defeat ended their season and 27-game winning streak. Prior to this year's football season, Simmons was on the court during Webster's district basketball final against Chaminade. Simmons poured in 33 points in a losing effort that ended the basketball squad's successful season. In both campaigns, Simmons and the Statesmen teams accomplished great success, establishing high rankings and competing superbly in tournaments and the …
