Freshman Clare Blase plans to ride in the 15-mile Oct. 7 race to raise money for the very disease she has. Can you help her get the yellow jersey?
Clare Blase, a freshman at Nerinx Hall High School, knows the importance of the upcoming St. Louis Pedal the Cause event, which raises money for cancer research. That's because the 14-year-old has firsthand experience with the disease. Clare, who lives in Shrewsbury, is battling adrenocortical carcinoma, which is a very aggressive cancer, said Cindy Blase, Clare's mom. Only one in 3 million people are diagnosed with the rare form of cancer, which affects the adrenal gland. “Pedal the Cause gives me hope,” Clare said. “To me, hope means that I can look forward to being around the people I love for a long time. Webster Groves police arrested an Affton man for stealing a GPS unit earlier this month in Shrewsbury.
On a traffic stop, Webster Groves police arrested an Affton man after finding a Garmin GPS device that had been stolen from Shrewsbury, according to the Shrewsbury Police Department The owner of the GPS, who reported the device missing on July 6, said it had been stolen from an unlocked 1995 Nissan Altima parked in the 90 block of Sandau Ave. some time in the last month, Shrewsbury police said. Three other potential suspects have been identified, and two have been questioned by police. The investigation is ongoing.

The 17 year old is believed to be involved with a group who held up women in store parking lots in Shrewsbury, Crestwood and Mehlville.
Crestwood police have arrested a man they believe is connected to a string of armed robberies that included a purse snatching last Tuesday in the parking lot of the Mackenzie Pointe Dierbergs in Shrewsbury. The four men are suspected in a string of armed robberies in Shrewsbury, Mehlville, Crestwood and North County.
St. Louis County police have released photos of four individuals they suspect of robbing a victim at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon at the Mackenzie Pointe Dierbergs parking lot and on Friday morning at the Kmart on Lemay Ferry Road. One suspect is described as a black male in his 20s, approximately 5 feet, 9 inches tall with short hair and eyeglasses. The other three are described as black males in their late teens or early 20s. The men also are suspected in connection with robberies in North County and Crestwood, police said. The suspects have been seen driving a dark green, early 2000 four-door Chevrolet Impala with a sunroof and spoiler. Adults donning bunny ears and team t-shirts turned out to search for hidden treats as part of the Webster Groves, Kirkwood, Shrewsbury Easter Egg Hunt.
Adults armed with flashlights and Easter baskets searched for prize-filled eggs last Friday as part of the Webster Groves, Kirkwood and Shrewsbury Adult Easter Egg Hunt. The event, which was co-sponsored by the Webster Groves, Kirkwood and Shrewsbury parks departments, was held at Kirkwood Park this year. Local merchants donated prizes for the event. Affton's Seven Holy Founders parish school may soon join the consolidation planned for three other local Catholic schools. The new Holy Cross Academy school system will include students from Annunciation in Webster Groves, Our Lady of Providence in Crestwood and St. Michael the Archangel in Shrewsbury. Representatives from the three parishes announced that they were combining the schools last fall. Under the current plan, the St. Michael and Our Lady of Providence campuses will serve students in kindergarten through fifth-grade. The Annunciation campus will become the academy's middle school serving sixth- through eighth-grade students. After the plan was announced, the Seven Holy Founders school board inquired about joining the new system…

The Webster Groves, Shrewsbury, Rock Hill Area Chamber of Commerce. That's the new name of the non-profit business group, which was established in 1937. The new name may seem a little long, but it now reflects all of the cities the chamber serves, including Rock Hill. For years, it had called the Webster Groves-Shrewsbury Area Chamber of Commerce. Rebecca Olson, the chamber's president, said Rock Hill Mayor Daniel DiPlacido had approached her and asked to have the city's name added to the chamber's name. She spoke to the board about it, which approved the name change. The famous cookies will be available this weekend and next weekend at Dierbergs at 9901 Manchester Rd. in Warson Woods, Dierbergs at 7233 Watson Rd. in Shrewsbury, Walgreens at 8571 Watson Rd. in Webster Groves and Straub's in Webster Groves.
