Webster Groves, Kirkwood Reel in Postseason Hoops Honors

Webster junior guard Jordan Thompson is the Suburban South Conference Player of the Year.

It took a 40-point performance from Chaminade’s Bradley Beal to stop the Webster Groves boys’ 13-game winning streak, and prevent the Statesmen from claiming a district championship. Still, Webster Groves finished 24-5, including a 7-0 mark to take first place this season in the Suburban South Conference. That has earned head coach Jay Blossom league Coach of the Year honors, and several Statesmen players have also received postseason recognition. Junior 6-foot-4 guard Rayshawn Simmons has been named to the all-conference first team. Simmons averaged 13.5 points and 4.2 assists per game this season. Simmons flashed some of what is to come next season when he poured in a career-high 33 points in the riveting 80-76 loss in the Class 5 …

Webster Senior Excels On, Off Court

Erin Reynolds was captain of Webster High School’s Girls varsity basketball team this year and is a top student as well.

Webster Groves High School senior forward Erin Reynolds is a power to be reckoned with on and off the basketball court. Not only was she captain of this year’s varsity team, which wrapped up conference play with a 5-2 record (13-14 overall), but she’s also a leader in academics. Reynolds, an 18-year-old, carries a 4.15 GPA and has earned the Renaissance Award for students with a 3.75 GPA or higher each year. In the fall, she will head to Case Western Reserve University to play Division III basketball and major in either biology or chemistry. She plans to go on to medical school. “Erin is a great kid,” Statesmen coach Patti Perkins said. “She is easily a leader through example, and we got her to step outside of her comfort zone to become a …

Thompson Propels Webster Girls to Sixth Straight Win

Junior Jordan Thompson scores 23 points as the Statesmen rout Parkway West, 78-54, in a Suburban South Conference game.

Behind junior Jordan Thompson's 23-point outburst, the Webster Groves girls basketball team hammered Parkway West, 78-54, at home in a Suburban South Conference game on Friday night. The Statesmen extended their winning streak to six games. They are 10-7 overall and 3-0 in league play. "We won by over 20 points, but I felt like this was one of those 10-point games where we just couldn't pull away and separate from them," Webster Groves coach Patti Perkins said. "We just kept preaching defense, defense, defense to our kids and it's literally baby steps each game." Besides Thompson's 23 points, the Statesmen had two other players score in double figures as sophomore Abbie Paloucek had 17 points while senior Erin Reynolds added 16. Paloucek …

Webster Girls Rout Mehlville For Fifth Straight Win

Webster Groves wins at Mehlville, 65-34, as Annie Paloucek makes her season debut.

After winning just one of their first four games, the Webster Groves girls basketball team may be finding their stride at just the right time. Webster used the season debut of Annie Paloucek and an ice-cold shooting night from Mehlville to win its fifth consecutive game Tuesday night in a dominating 65-34 win over the Panthers at Mehlville High School. The win was the eighth in 11 games for the surging Statesmen, which got a game-high 13 points from leading scorer Jordan Thompson. “Right now, this is the time we need to peak,” said Webster coach Patti Perkins. “We’ve got our tournament next week, and we’re in conference play. We’ve got a tough district coming up, the second to fifth seeds could go to anybody, so we’re fighting for our …

Webster Girls Win Fourth Straight, Rout U-City

Webster Groves junior Jordan Thompson scores 14 points to lead the Statesmen to a 64-33 win over University City at Roberts Gymnasium.

Webster Groves junior guard Jordan Thompson has a theory about rankings and seedings. "They don't mean a thing," she says. "The only number that really matters is the one on the scoreboard beside your team's name." Thompson, who is averaging 20.1 points per game, scored a game-high 14 points on Friday to lead Webster Groves to an easy 64-33 win over University City in a Suburban South Conference game at Roberts Gymnasium. The win was the fourth straight and seventh in the past 10 games for the Statesmen, who improved to 8-7 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Webster lost four of its first five games this season against some top-notch opponents. Since that rough early schedule, Thompson and her teammates have been on fire. And they've been…

The Cinderella ride for the Webster Groves girls basketball team ended in the semifinals of the 36th annual Visitation Christmas Tournament on Sunday night. The 13th-seeded Statesmen (3-5) fell to top-seeded and unbeaten St. Joseph's Academy (7-0), 59-40. Webster will play Fort Zumwalt West in the third-place game of the tournament Monday night at 6 p.m. The Jaguars lost a tough game to Incarnate Word Academy, 50-47, in the other semifinal Sunday night. The 59 points were a season-low for a very talented St. Joe's squad. "We preach defense and I thought the girls really got after it with a few hiccups tonight," Webster coach Patti Perkins said. "We did a good job of shutting down the Stock's." Maddie and Morgan Stock entered the game as …
