WOW! Lots of heated emotional commentary here, I am glad to see the discussion. Yes, there is error in dog management in this situation. Yes, it is good to recognize that and yes, I am glad the Emmy Lou got fixed up by the vet. Can she be rehabilitiated? That is something that no professional can assess until one actually meets and works with the animal, and ABSOLUTELY the owner MUST be 100% on board. I have only worked with two dogs who have killed humans, one was put to sleep, the other was and muzzled 24 hours a day. Extreme? Yes, and not applicable to this case, but management is a huge issue and it appears that management needs to be tightened up here (aka no more loose gates, etc). This poor owner is suffering for her dog's social inapropriateness, and needs some coaching in how to get her to become more comfortable in her human environment.

I have worked with the APA for years and sit on the Purina board of the Saint Louis Pet Lover's Coalition with them, we work closely together once a month, since this dog was adopted from the APA I will be contacting them for background information, and hope that her owner seeks professional help. St. Louis is renouned for its horrible reputation as a punitive based training community, which will only promote more aggression out of defence and fear, so I hope that her owner finds a positve based trainer versed in operant conditioning. Good luck to you, Ann, and if you would like to call me, I will watch for you, Dorene

    Julie:
My first cat, Pepper, was also black. I still miss him, they are hard to loose.

I should mention that the tickets to Kimmswick need to be purchased in advance and they do sell out, so do call or go online and get your tickets!

Sally! Good to see you - thanks for the comment. If you know of Hard Tack - how did they bake it? Also, just curious - why would you not eat the eggs? All of the ingredients in this recipe are obviously edible. tia - Dorene

    Hi again, Sherry:

Oh, I am so sorry that Mr. Darcy is having so much trouble! Sitting hunched could have several reasons, again, since I can't see it and am not a veterinarian, I can't advise. When was the last time that he had a complete physical exam? My cat is in her 20's and her only symptom that she was ill was that she slept 23 hours a day instead of 22 hours a day. I am joking, of course, but she was lethargic and that is why I took her in. That would be my most profound suggestion for your little senior.

    Best of luck with him!

Hi Beth and Sherry, thank you for your replies.

Beth, how unfortunate (but common) that both your seniors have this. My first three cats lived to be 19, 22, and 25 years old and did not have thyroid disease, I was lucky.

Sherry, I am not a veterinarian and cannot diagnose, nor should anyone give advice on health without a doctor/patient live relationship, so regretfully, I cannot help you with your kitty. I have never heard of using fluids to increase weight, perhaps your vet was referring to something else? Testing for thyroid disease alone does not cost $400.00, although diagnostic testing for unknown illnesses, especially in geriatric cats, can certainly add up. I would certainly make another appointment with your veterinarian to discuss her condition more fully and express your concerns, perhaps even consult his or her partner or another vet to get a second opinion - two heads are better than one, sometimes - and there are wonderful specialists in the area who you could be referred to if need be. 17 years old is getting up there, and they do get medical problems, I well know that, but there are so many treatments available now that can keep them comfortable if euthanasia is not a first and best option, as you are suggesting.

As for her eating the dry food, have you tried soaking it in warm water? Sometimes softening it can help.

Best of luck with her, I hope that you can get some help and have less questions,
    Dorene

    Hi Nancy!

I think that my animals in particular and the world in general were put here for me to laugh at - I love how funny life is! My Irish heritage helps me muddle through all that life throws at me by always being able to find a funny good in every bad, and I am grateful for that inherited character trait - laughing takes the same energy as crying, and is so much more fun :).

Thanks for your comments - people for years have been telling me to write a book, and boy, am I having fun blogging.

Keep laughing - Dorene and The Painting Pets

    OH NO!!!!!

I had major surgery one time and did not realize that they had catheterized me until later, when they removed it (ok, gorked out on morphine, usually more observant than that!). They informed me that the first time, while I was under, was not a problem to put it in, but warned me that if I needed it replaced while awake that that would be a situation entirely different. Your POOR DAD!!!! Tell him that I think that he is a great guy - I would have wanted a word with that kitty, myself!
